‘Every game will be a fight’ – Cheltenham Town defender Caleb Taylor reflects on crucial 1-0 victory over struggling Morecambe, looks ahead to MK Dons

Cheltenham Town defender Caleb Taylor was in good spirits after an important victory against rock-bottom Morecambe.

The Robins were left disappointed after a 1-0 loss against a poor Burton Albion side, but this victory lifts them up to 18th place and four points clear of the relegation zone.

On the win being a morale-booster, Taylor said: “It’s massive. The lads were really disappointed on Saturday, we felt it was a big opportunity missed. So to react to that and get a win is massive for us, and we’ll take it onto Saturday.”

Cheltenham kept their fifth clean sheet of the season with a strong defensive performance against The Shrimps, and the 19-year-old centre back has been a regular in the heart of the defence so far this campaign.

“Keeping clean sheets for me is the main thing,” Taylor said.

“It sets us up to win more games, because the less goals we concede the more chance we have of winning.”

There’s still a lot of football to play this season, meaning the four point gap between Cheltenham and the drop zone could look very different by the beginning of May.

“Obviously it was a massive win. They were below us in the league so we felt like we had to win,” said the West Brom loanee.

“But we still know that we’re only a third of the way through the season so we’ve got a lot to go. Every game will be a fight, and we know that.”

Up next for Taylor and Cheltenham is the visit of MK Dons to The Completely-Suzuki Stadium. This is once again another game they should be looking to win, with The Dons sitting in 21st place.

Both teams are coming into this one off the back of a victory, with MK Dons picking up a midweek win against Charlton Athletic, so each side will be wanting to carry this momentum forward.

Looking ahead to this game, Taylor said: “They’re obviously in a similar situation to us being near the bottom. It will be a very tough game, we know it will be another tough game like today, but we feel that we have really good players, good team spirit, so we will hopefully come out on top.”

MK Dons having striker Will Grigg is certainly something Taylor and the Robins’ defence will need to prepare for.

On this, he said: “We’ll do a lot of analysis meetings. I’ll get told by coaches what their threats are as individuals and as a team. We’ll look in depth at what their strengths are so we can nullify it.”

The defender is gaining valuable experience at such a young age, and will undoubtedly aim to play at a higher level as his career progresses. But for now, his focus lies only on Cheltenham.

“I’ll focus on that (trying to get into the West Brom starting line-up) next season.. I’m focusing now on Cheltenham, doing my best for them and hopefully we can succeed.”
